Strategy: Creating a Roadmap for a Successful Career Move
“There is nothing so useless as doing efficiently that which should not be done at all.” — Peter Drucker.
This module builds on the findings out of Module 1: CLARITY.
Module 2: STRATEGY is all about figuring out what should be done for the fulfilment of your vision.
- Ask yourself: “Am I qualified to take on the new role or responsibilities?“
A winning STRATEGY takes into consideration and addresses your weaknesses and the anticipated roadblocks on your path to career fulfilment. Training on technical or soft skills should be on your agenda to ensure you are ready to convince others. Examples of training and (personal) development could include leadership training, an online course to brush up your data analysis skills or interview and mindset coaching to ensure you confidently advocate for yourself to get the job that you are indeed ready for.
- Also ask yourself: “Which individuals have an influence on my appointment and/or performance on the job?“.
As the saying goes, “No man is an island, entire of itself; every man is a piece of the continent, a part of the main.” Whatever the target role, it will be important to know who these stakeholders are and ensure that they see you in the target role and trust that you can handle the new responsibilities. Examples of these stakeholders are; hiring managers, references from your current/previous job, future subordinates and your LinkedIn network. Your personal brand should speak to your competency both online and offline.
The areas of focus vary with each unique profile but can be typically categorized into three key areas.
Here’s your STRATEGY Checklist:
✅ TRAINING and (PERSONAL) DEVELOPMENT
- Identify and prioritize the areas of improvement for your professional profile – mindset, soft and hard/technical skills
✅ POSITIONING
- Ensure your brand is in line with your vision and you are in the right environment to realise your professional dream
✅ COMMUNICATION
- Identify the relevant stakeholders – the right audience, wording and channels to support the fulfilment of your vision
